The South Eastern European country is home to 21.5 million people, of which one in ten lives in the capital Bucharest. Romania has been a member of the European Union since 2007. The most important river in the country is the Danube, which flows for over a thousand kilometers through or along Romania before it flows via the Danube Delta into the Black Sea. Romania's flora and fauna are diverse, particularly in higher lying forest areas.
